《경계없이 낯설게》|《The Strange Encounter》

2024년 9월 2일부터 11월 15일까지 《경계없이 낯설게 The Strange Encounter》라는 주제로 서울조각상 입선작가 10인과 초대작가 8인으로 구성된 전시가 열린송현녹지광장에서 개최된다. 2024년 조각도시서울의 예술감독 맹지영은 조각을 포함해 여러 매체와 영역을 넘나들며 각자의 실험을 해오고 있는 30-40대의 서울조각상 입선작가들과. 중견을 비롯하여 원로, 작고 작가로 구성된 8명의 초대 작가들의 작품을 선보인다. 이번 전시에서는 다양한 세대 작가들의 조형적 실험을 동시에 조우하게 되면서 보다 입체적으로 작가들이 가졌을 조각의 시간을 살펴볼 수 있는 계기가 될 것이다.

서로 다른 시간이 교차하는 서울은 이미 다양하고 낯선 시각물이 넘친다. 서로 드러나려고 애쓰는 이들의 경쟁 안에서 시선을 멈추게 할 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까? 일상과는 다른 속도의 개입을 통해 예상치 못한 감상의 기회를 선사해 주는 예술 작품은 우리에게 새로운 경험을 가능케 한다. 이들을 만나는 매개의 장소로서 서울은 이제 거대한 전시장이 된다. 건물은 전시장의 가벽이 되기도 하고, 공원은 작품을 놓는 좌대가 되기도 한다. 낯설음은 균형과 불균형의 경계를 아슬아슬하게 줄타기를 하며 넘나드는데서 경험하게 되는데, 작가들이 만들어 내는 상상의 세계를 서울이라는 전시장을 통해 경계 없이 만나게 되길 기대한다.

The Strange Encounter presents the works of 10 finalists of the inaugural Seoul Sculpture Prize and 8 guest artists, on view from September 2 to November 15, 2024, at Songhyeon Green Plaza. Jee Young Maeng, the artistic director of Sculpture City, Seoul 2024, will introduce the works of the finalists of the Seoul Sculpture Prize—artists in their 30s and 40s who have been experimenting across various media and fields—and 8 guest artists who are veterans in their fields. The exhibition will offer a three-dimensional overview of the sculptural experiments undertaken by artists from various generations.

Seoul, a city where different times intersect, is already brimming with distinct and curious visuals. Amid this competition for visibility, how can we arrest the gaze of viewers? Artwork that interrupts the pace of everyday life and offers unexpected opportunities to appreciate art opens up new experiences. Seoul, as it becomes a medium for such interaction, transforms into a giant exhibition hall. Buildings become partitions and parks become pedestals upon which the artworks are displayed. To experience unfamiliarity is to walk a tightrope between balance and imbalance. We hope viewers encounter the imaginary worlds created by the artists through the boundless exhibition space called Seoul.
