이영섭은 조각이라는 매체를 통해 인간의 내면을 표현하고 시대를 재조명한다. 그는 10여 년간 테라코타 작업에 전념했으며 흙, 가마, 불이라는 물성 작업을 하다가 ‘발굴기법’이라는 새로운 장르를 개척하였다.

<어린왕자>는 삶을 살아가면서 우리에게 진정으로 소중한 것이 무엇인가라는 질문을 다시 한번 되새기게 하는 작품이다. ‘어린왕자’는 우리 모두의 내면에 존재하는 ‘영원한 아이’의 상징으로, 보는 이로 하여금 잊고 살아온 본래의 순수한 마음을 돌이켜보게 한다. 작가는 ‘눈에 보이지 않을 것을 보아야 한다’는 어린왕자의 동화적 시각과 절대 순수를 이야기하며 이를 투박한 듯하면서 세련된 한국적인 미를 가진 형상으로 표현했다. <어린왕자>의 가슴에 박혀 있는 원석과 유리는 땅에서 캐낸 것으로 마치 심장을 연상시키며 생명력, 긍정으로 빛나는 마음, 환한 미래, 건강과 희망을 상징한다. 작가는 세종문화회관이 우리나라의 역사와 문화가 총체적으로 표현된 공간이므로 작품을 통해 우리의 삶과 시대에 대해 되돌아보고자 한다.

Lee Yeoung Sup expresses the inner self of human being and sheds new light on the era through the medium of sculpture. He devoted himself to terracotta work for more than a decade and pioneered a new genre, called ‘excavation technique,’ while working with the physical properties of earth, kiln, and fire.

<Le Petit Prince> is a work that once again reminds us of the question of what is truly important to us in life. ‘Le Petit Prince’ is a symbol of the ‘eternal child’ that exists within all of us, and makes the audience look back on the original innocence that we have forgotten. The artist talks about the fairy tale perspective and absolute innocence of the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), who shall ‘see the unseen,’ and expresses it in a form of a figure with a rugged yet sophisticated Korean aesthetic. The gemstones and glass embedded in the chest of <Le Petit Prince> are mined from the ground and resemble a heart, while symbolizing vitality, a heart glowing with positivity, a bright future, health, and hope. As the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is a space where the history and culture of Korea are comprehensively expressed, the artist hopes to reflect on our lives and times through his work.
