파운드리 서울은 아스트리드 테라자스(Astrid Terrazas)의 한국 첫 개인전 Los Rostros Falsos (The False Faces)를 개최한다. 작가는 매우 세밀하게 대상을 묘사하는 방식으로 작업하며, 부적과 장신구, 실을 활용해 캔버스를 장식한다. 이처럼 다양한 매체를 활용한 테라자스의 회화는 마치 꿈을 시각적으로 표현한 일기를 연상시키며, 정처 없이 떠도는 인물과 고대 상징 기호, 비현실적인 서사로 가득하다. 또한 작가는 꿈의 풍경, 멕시코 전통 설화, 실제 경험, 초자연적 변형이 어우러진 독특한 시각 언어를 구사한다. 작품에서 반복되는 모티프는 과거의 트라우마로부터 자신을 보호하는 역할을 하며, 변화와 치유에 관한 보편적인 은유를 불러일으킨다.
‘거짓된 얼굴’을 뜻하는 Los Rostros Falsos 전시에서 테라자스는 월경 주기의 복잡성을 은유적으로 표현한 새로운 회화 시리즈를 선보인다. 대담하게 자신의 취약성을 드러내며, 작가는 예측 불가능하고 불안정한 정신과 육체에 맞서 싸우는 내면을 그려낸다. 여러 작품에 등장하는 근육질의 말은 통제할 수 없고 길들지 않은 형이상학적 신체를 상징한다. 예를 들면 (2023) 작품에서 음산한 분위기의 난로 아래 자궁이 훤히 보이는 말이 보인다. 중심인물인 여성은 말발굽 아래 깔려 피부가 찢어지고, 여성이 흘린 피는 종교적 제물을 연상시키는 성배로 흐른다. 작가는 가슴을 해부학에서 나오는 그림처럼 묘사하여, 호르몬으로 인해 고통스럽게 부은 모습을 강조한다. 비록 여성은 움직일 수 없지만, 말과 겨루기 위해 밧줄을 향해 손을 앞으로 뻗는다.
(2024)등의 작품들은 (2023)과 서로 연결된다. 중심인물은 이제 말 위에 올라타 미약하게 균형을 잡고 있다. 그러나 자연의 섭리에 따라 여성은 여전히 피를 흘리고, 피는 말과 나무 모양의 심장으로 흘러 들어간다. 변덕스러운 비둘기는 여성 인물의 피부를 쪼아대는데, 비둘기 몸에는 작품에 영감을 준 자작시 한 구절이 적혀 있다. ‘당신은 천사처럼 날아가네, 두 손 모아 기도하며. “나는 그녀를 도우려 했어요.’’’ 이번 Los Rostros Falsos 전시에서 작가는 삶의 방향과 주체성을 찾기 위해 인내하는 모습을 묘사하면서도, 자연의 이중성을 인정하고 통제할 수 없는 것을 받아들이는 태도를 보여준다.
FOUNDRY SEOUL is pleased to present Los Rostros Falsos, Astrid Terrazas’s first solo exhibition with FOUNDRY SEOUL. Working in an illustrative, highly detailed style and often adorning her canvases with talismans, charms, and threadwork, Terrazas’ multimedia paintings resemble a visual dream diary full of transient figures, archaic symbols, and chimerical narratives. Wielding a singular visual language which merges dreamscapes, Mexican ancestral folklore, lived experiences, and unearthly transfigurations, Terrazas’s recurring motifs function as artifacts of protection and evoke universal metaphors of transformation and healing.
In Los Rostros Falsos, or The False Faces, Terrazas presents a new series of paintings and that together create an allegory for the complexities of the menstrual cycle. With bold vulnerability, Terrazas expresses an internal fight to grapple with the unpredictability and instability of the mind and body. In multiple works a muscular horse becomes a stand-in for a metaphysical body that is uncontrollable and untamed. In , 2023, Terrazas depicts the horse, its uterus in plain view, underneath a ghostly fire. The central figure is pinned underneath the animal’s hooves breaking skin, her blood flowing into a chalice reminiscent of a religious offering. The figure’s breast is shown as an anatomical drawing, which highlights a painful hormonal swell. Although pinned the figures reaches forwards for a rope to wrangle the beast.
Works such as , 2024 are in conversation with In , 2023. Here the central figure has mounted the horse, tenuously balanced. While nature still draws blood, the bloods flows into the horse and into a tree shaped heart. Written on the flighty doves who pick at her skin is a stanza from a poem the artist wrote which inspired the painting: “you fly like an angel, hands in prayer “I tried to help her.”” In Los Rostros Falsos, Terrazas portrays the perseverance to find guidance and agency while honoring the duality of nature and acceptance of what cannot be controlled.
