이환권 작가는 일상 속 인물을 과장된 비율로 왜곡해 현실과 허구의 경계를 탐구하는 작가이다. 그의 작품은 입체와 평면, 실체와 그림자가 혼재된 착시적 조형을 통해 관람자의 인식에 도전하는데, 영화적 장면이나 사회적 이슈를 소재로 삼아 현대인의 긴장된 삶과 정서적 풍경을 조각으로 형상화한다.
이번에 전시되는 <난민복서>는 해결할 수도 피할 수도 없는 타지 생활에 관한 이야기이다. 그가 싸워야 할 상대는 복서들만이 아니라 우리 모두의 이야기이다. 다른 작품 <통일>은 북한에서 온 남자와 대한민국 여자의 모습을 표현하였고 작가는 상징적으로 작은 통일을 이야기한다.
이환권(b.1974) 작가는 경원대학교 미술대학 환경조각과와 동대학원을 졸업하였으며, 예화랑(2016), CMay Gallery & West Hollywood Park(2016), 서울시청광장(2015-2018), 롯데월드타워(2015-2018), 낙산스페이스(2015) 등 다양한 전시에 참여하였고 2017년에는 김세중 청년조각상을 수상하였다.
Hwan-kwon Yi explores the boundaries between reality and fiction by exaggerating and distorting the proportions of everyday figures. His works challenge the viewer’s perception through optical illusions that blend the three dimensional with the two dimensional, substance and shadows. Drawing inspiration from movies scenes and social issues, he visualizes the emotional landscape and tension of contemporary life through sculpture.
Refugee Boxer tells the story of living abroad, a life that can neither be resolved nor escaped. The boxer is fighting not only his opponents but also the struggles that we all face. Unification portrays a North Korean man and a South Korean woman, a microcosm of unification.
Hwan-kwon Yi(b.1974) earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Environmental Sculpture from Kyungwon University. He has exhibited his work in venues such as Gallery Yeh (2016), CMay Gallery & West Hollywood Park (2016), Seoul Plaza (2015-2018), Lotte World Tower (2015-2018), and Naksan Space (2015). He won the Kim Sejoong Young Sculpture Award in 2017.
