Unearthing-Iron Castle 변상환 Byun Sanghwan 철 3~15 × 40~60 × 40~60 cm (9) Iron 2024 금성출토(金城出土) Byun Sanghwan’s work begins with a rock found on a corner in Pungnap-dong. Byun’s Corner Stone series is an extension of his earlier works, which utilized rocks from the Nak-san area around Changsin-dong. This series captures the collected rocks through photographs, then by casting the rocks’ bottoms into shallow relief sculptures, which are then named after the addresses of their original locations. Through this process, the artist uses objects reminiscent of the past to capture and prolong the moments of the present, allowing it to linger.

For this exhibition, Byun Sanghwan wandered around the alleys of Pungnap-dong, documenting rocks with ambiguous functions. The bottoms of these rocks were relief-cast into iron and installed on the floors of 126-186 Pungnap-dong between residential homes. The iron sculptures in the shape of flat rocks transform from a simple object into a modern relic that encapsulates the passage of time. For Byun, these rocks serve as familiar, everyday objects embedded in the lives of local residents, and a present existence revealing the not-so-distant past of the Pungnap-dong region. 변상환의 작업은 풍납동 골목 모퉁이에서 발견한 돌에서 시작된다. ‘코너 스톤(Corner Stone)’ 시리즈는 그가 창신동 낙산 주변의 암석을 활용한 초기 작업의 연장선에 있다. 이 작업은 수집한 돌을 사진으로 담아내고, 돌의 아랫면을 얕은 부조 형태로 캐스팅한 조각에 그 장소의 주소를 이름으로 붙인다. 이처럼 작가는 과거를 기억하게 하는 오브제를 매개로 현실의 순간을 붙잡아 두고 그 풍경을 오래 머물게 한다.
이번 전시에서 변상환은 풍납동 골목을 돌아다니며 쓰임이 모호한 바위들을 발굴하고 기록한다. 이 바위들의 아랫면을 부조로 캐스팅하고 철 주물로 제작된 조각은 주택 사이의 풍납동 126-186번지 바닥에 설치된다. 너럭바위 모양의 철 조각은 단순한 오브제에서 시간의 흐름이 압축된 현대적 유물로 변모한다. 변상환에게 이 돌은 주민들의 삶 속에 녹아드는 친숙한 일상의 오브제이자, 풍납동 지역의 멀지 않은 과거를 드러내는 현재의 존재다.
