김영원 작가는 광화문광장의 세종대왕상을 만든 국내 대표 원로작가이다. 그는 입체와 평면이 공존하는 독특한 이미지를 창출하고, 인체의 구조를 자유롭게 해체하고 조립하여 음양이 공존하는 현실과 비현실의 경계에 선 조형 세계를 구현하고자 한다. 이러한 조형은 관객을 선(禪)의 화두처럼 끝없는 사유로 이끌어간다.
김영원의 조각은 실체가 아닌 부재의 흔적을 조각한다. 《그림자의 그림자》 시리즈는 사라진 자리의 감각과 그림자의 그림자를 통해, 말해지지 않은 감정의 음영을 형상화한 작품이다. 보이지 않는 존재의 여운을 조형 언어로 풀어내며, 잠재된 실재에 대한 질문을 던진다.
김영원(b.1947) 작가는 홍익대학교 미술대학 학장을 지냈으며, 김해가야테마파크(2025)에서 개인전을 개최하였다.이태리 파도바 시립미술관, 시청, 광장 등에서 열린 《노벨로 피노티, 김영원》(2013) 2인전과 쌍파울루 비엔날레 등에 참여하며 왕성한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 다가오는 2026년 김해시립김영원조각미술관 개관을 앞두고 있다.
Youngwon Kim is a prominent Korean sculptor best known for creating the statue of King Sejong at Gwanghwamun Square. He creates unique images in which the three-dimensional coexists with the two-dimensional, and deconstructs the human form to devise a world that lies on the boundary between reality and fiction, where yin and yang are in harmony. His work invites viewers into a state of endless meditation and contemplation, much like a Zen koan.
Kim creates sculptures that are traces of absence. Through places that no longer exist and their shadows of shadows, his Shadow of Shadow series embodies the shades of unspoken emotions. By conveying the lingering presence of invisible beings through sculpture, he raises questions about latent existence.
Youngwon Kim(b.1947) served as the Dean of Fine Arts at Hongik University. He has held multiple solo exhibitions at venues such as Gimhae Gaya History Park (2025) and participated in numerous international exhibitions, including a joint exhibit with Novello Finotti in Padova, Italy, and the São Paulo Biennale. The Gimhae Kim Young Won Sculpture Musuam will open in 2026.
