이시(b.1990)는 경북대학교 미술학과에서 조소를 전공하고 서울시립대학교 대학원에서 환경조각학과를 수료하였다. 대안공간 루트(2024), 올리비아박 갤러리(2023), 맨션나인(2022), 당림미술관(2021), 갤러리메이(2018), 빨간벽돌갤러리(2017) 등에서 개인전을 열었고, 미국, 영국, 싱가포르 등 국내외 다수의 아트페어에 참가하였다. 이시는 한국현대조각 초대전에서 올해의 작품상(2020)을 수상한 바 있다.

이시는 사회적 이면을 재해석하여 작품으로 표현하는 예술가이다. 그는 우연히 발견한 이미지나 사건에서 출발하여 인간의 보편적인 감정과 사회적 메시지를 담은 작업을 이어가고 있다. 특히, 입양을 기다리는 아이들의 모습에서 영감을 받아, 그들이 단순한 객체가 아닌 당당한 주체로 존재할 수 있도록 작품을 창조한다.

서울연극창작센터에서 열리는 이번 전시는 우리가 소비하는 이미지 속 숨겨진 의미를 탐구하고, 그 이면의 사회적 현실을 조명한다. 화려하게 차려입은 한 소년의 사진은 상류층 아이처럼 보이지만, 사실 그는 입양을 기다리는 고아였다. 이런 단편적 이미지는 우리가 시각적 경험을 얼마나 피상적으로 해석하는지를 보여준다. 전시는 이미지가 단순한 소비 대상이 아니라 고유한 이야기와 가치를 지닌 존재임을 환기한다. “pick Me 시리즈” <FLY HIGH> 통해 입양을 기다리는 아이들이 동정의 대상이 아니라 존엄성과 개성을 지닌 존재임을 강조하며, 사회적 편견을 넘어 희망과 가능성을 발견하는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

Leesi (b.1990) graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the College of Arts of Kyungpook National University, and completed his graduate degree from the Department of Sculpture at University of Seoul. He held his solo exhibitions at the Alternative Space Loot (2024), Olivia Park Gallery (2023), Mansion 9 (2022), Dangnim Art Center (2021), Gallery Mei (2018), and Redbrick Gallery (2017), and participated in many art fairs in Korea and abroad, including USA, England, and Singapore. He has awarded the Artwork of the Year (2020) from the Invitational Exhibition Modern Korea Sculpture.

Leesi is an artist who reinterprets the other sides of society and expresses them in his works. Starting from the images or events that he accidentally encounters, he continues to create works that contain universal human feelings and social messages. Inspired particularly by children waiting for adoption, he creates works that allow them to exist as dignified subjects rather than just objects.

This exhibition, held at the Seoul Theater Creation Center, explores the hidden meanings behind the images we consume and casts light upon the social realities behind them. A photo of colorfully dressed boy who seems to be a child of an upper-class, is indeed a photo of an orphan waiting to be adopted. Such fragmentary image demonstrates how superficially we interpret our visual experiences. This exhibition reminds us that images are not just objects to be consumed, but have their own stories and values. Through the <FLY HIGH> of “pick Me series”, it is aimed to emphasize that children waiting to be adopted are not objects of pity, but beings with dignity and individuality, and to provide an opportunity to discover hope and potential beyond social prejudice.
