Kim leaves the wood out for days, staring at it, contemplating its existence, shape, and scent before beginning to whittle it without planning ahead. Specifically created for outdoor installation, Vitality of Earth selected a piece of wood that took on a new life in the sunlight and cast it in bronze. Despite its solid and tough properties, the work looks as if it had existed in harmony with its surroundings for a long time, reflecting the artist’s approach to wood.
Yunshin Kim(b.1935) has degrees in Sculpture from Hongik University and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. She has held multiple solo exhibitions at venues such as Kukje Gallery (2024), Nam-Seoul Museum of Art (2023), Whitewave Art Center (2022, 2015), Gallery Banditrazos (2022), E2 Art Gallery(2022), and Centro Cultural Coreano en Argentina (2022). She has participated in multiple group exhibitions at local and international venues such as the 60th Venice Biennale, Park Sugeun Museum, Centro Cultural Coreano en España, Centro Cultural Coreano en Argentina, Ahn Sang Chul Museum, Internal Stone Culture Project, and the Korean Cultural Center at Washington, D.C.
김윤신은 나무를 며칠동안 가만히 놓아두고 오랜 시간 바라보며 존재와 생김새, 향기까지 느끼는 과정을 거친 후에 구체적인 구상 없이 하나하나 깎아 나간다. 야외 설치를 위해 특별히 제작된 작품은 햇살 아래에서 마치 새로운 생명력을 부여받은 듯한 나무 조각을 브론즈로 캐스팅하였다. 단단하고 강인한 물성을 가지고 있지만, 주변의 자연과 어우러져 오랜 시간 그 장소에서 존재했던 것처럼 대지 위에 놓인 작품은 나무를 대하는 작가의 태도를 그대로 담고 있다.
김윤신(b.1935)은 홍익대학교 미술대학 조소과와 프랑스 파리 국립고등미술학교를 졸업하였다. 국제갤러리(2024) 서울시립남서울미술관(2023), 흰물결아트센터(2022, 2015), 반디트라소(2022), E2 Art Gallery(2022), 주아르헨티나한국문화원(2022) 등에서 개인전을 개최했고, 제60회 베니스비엔날레, 박수근미술관, 주스페인한국문화원, 주아르헨티나한국문화원, 안상철미술관, 국제돌문화프로젝트, 주워싱턴한국문화원, 주아르헨티나한국문화원 등 국내외 다수의 단체전에 참가했다.
