무거운 점들 – 정성윤

Heavy Dots 정성윤 Sungyoon Jung 스테인리스 스틸, PVC 공 400 × 100 × 100 cm Stainless steel, PVC balls 2024 무거운 점들 Since 2019, Sungyoon Jung has been exhibiting installations featuring architecturally arranged stacks of PVC balls. The tension created by the immense scale and materiality of the works interacts with and delineates the spaces in which they are situated in various ways. The artist introduces flexibility and movement to rigid machinery, creating moments when the edges of objects become blurred and, at times, orchestrates transitions that overwhelm the sites where the sculptures come into contact.

This exhibition presents Jung’s Heavy Dots, a four-meter-tall stainless steel structure in which balls of variable sizes and elasticities press against each other, compressing and protruding. The artist explores the boundaries of sculpture within art by stacking up structures made of industrial materials, such as stainless steel and PVC. With that, an enormous mass stacked up layer by layer seems to appear out of nowhere, disrupting and offering a new perception of the site known as Pungnap-dong.

Jung employs the piled-up grid structure as a metaphor for the continuum of time, spanning from the past to the present; the black spheres embedded within the structure subtly allude to the humans who have driven historical progress. 정성윤 작가는 2019년부터 PVC 공을 건축적으로 쌓아 올리는 설치 작품들을 선보여 왔다. 작품의 거대한 크기와 물성이 자아내는 긴장감은 작품이 놓이는 공간을 다양한 방식으로 접촉하고 분리한다. 작가는 경직된 기계에 유연함과 움직임을 부여하면서 사물의 외곽이 흐려지는 순간을 자아내고, 때로는 조각과 맞닿는 장소를 압도하는 장면의 전환을 꾀한다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 <무거운 점들>은 거대한 4m 높이의 스테인리스 스틸 구조 속에 가변 크기의 탄성을 가진 공들이 서로를 짓누르면서 압축되고 돌출한다. 작가는 산업 재료인 스테인리스 스틸과 PVC 재질의 구조물을 켜켜이 쌓아 올림으로써 미술의 영역 안에서 조각의 범주를 탐구한다. 층층이 쌓아 올려진 거대한 덩어리는 불현듯 출현해 풍납동이란 공간을 교란하고 새롭게 지각하게 한다.
작가는 위로 쌓아 올린 격자 구조를 통해 과거부터 현재까지의 시간을 은유하고, 그 안에 채워진 검은색 구(球)를 통해 역사를 견인해온 인간 주체들의 존재를 암시한다.
