Donghun Sung first gained recognition with his Don Quixote series and has since continued to expand his unique artistic world by experimenting with various materials and forms. He is particularly known for using rough materials such as iron, cement, and discarded waste to symbolically portray the human psyche and social structures. His works appear rough on the outside but their internal structures contain deep symbolic meanings. The sculptures open and close, inviting the interaction of viewers.
The exhibition features three of his works—Into Time and Space, Echo of Fire, and Echo of Iron from the Furnace—that are the result of Sung’s nomadic thought, a practice based on his philosophy of rejecting fixed forms. Sung often works in extreme environments such as the desert, exploring new possibilities in sculpture through the fusion of imagination and materiality. His sculptures, often in the form of hybrid animal, are regarded as contemporary reinterpretations of ancient myths. Sung is considered an artist that exemplifies both the experimental spirit and philosophical depth of contemporary Korean sculpture.
Donghun Sung(b.1967) graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Chung-Ang University’s College of Arts. He has held over 19 solo exhibitions at venues such as the Korean Cultural Center in Washington D.C. (2024), the Museum of Goa in India (2015), and the Savina Museum (2015).
