While “solaris” means “sun” in Latin, Lee expands this into a concept that explores the creation of presence through heat. Without the action of heat, nothing can exist or be sustained—Lee’s sculpture, which reflects such thought, uses growth and contemplation as the driving force of metamorphosis. Solaris-Eclosion presents the moment when a silkworm becomes an imago, a moment of new growth and metamorphosis.
Seong-gu Lee (b.1984) earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Environmental Sculpture from the University of Seoul. In addition to his solo exhibition at the Insa Art Center (2016), Lee has participated in many group exhibitions held at venues such as Eclectic Gallery and Saatchi Gallery, and is working actively both in Korea and abroad.
‘솔라리스(Solaris)’는 라틴어에서 ‘태양’을 의미하지만 그의 작업 세계에서는 열을 통한 현존의 생성원리를 탐구하는 개념으로 확장하였다. 열의 작용 없이는 어떤 것도 존재하거나 유지될 수 없으며 이러한 사유를 반영한 조형적 형상은 성장과 사유의 동력을 매개로 우화(羽化)하는 모습을 표현했다. 이번 서울 조각상 출품작은 번데기가 성충이 되는 새로운 성장의 순간을 전하는 우화적 형상으로 관람객들에게 선보인다.
이성구(b.1984)는 서울시립대학교 환경조각학과와 동 대학원에서 석사를 졸업했다. 가나인사아트센터(2016) 개인전을 비롯하여, Eclectic Gallery(런던, 영국), Saatchi Gallery(런던, 영국) 등에서 다수의 단체전에 참여하며 다양한 국내외 활동을 하고 있다.
