2024 농민들1 작가 및 작품 소개 듣기 Sling Belt & Others is a sculpture in which different ropes and bars such as sling belts, a device used to lift or fasten heavy objects, are casually placed on a steel structure. Hidden at the bottom of the work is a pair of legs, suggesting that the sculpture represents a body. The sculpture is composed of objects found in work sites rather than everyday life, evoking the people who use the tools and their work environment where tension and fatigue coexist.

The work is created through a labor-intensive process of casting the objects with FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) and assembling them. Sling belts and ropes are always in a state of tension because they are often used to carry or support heavy objects. But in Sling Belt & Others, the ropes and belts are not being put to use, but are rather relaxed and draped on the steel structure like a person on break after completing a task. These objects found in work sites become metaphors for humans who also perform labor, experience fatigue, and seek rest and relaxation.

* This artwork is partially made possible by the generous support of Dr. Tae Seok OH and Dr. Eun Sil YU. <슬링벨트 외>는 무거운 물건을 들어 옮기거나 고정할 때 사용하는 슬링벨트와 같은 각종 로프, 바 등이 철 구조물 위에 자연스럽게 얹힌 형상의 조각이다. 작품 하단부에는 마치 그 형상이 몸체로 짐작게 하는 다리가 숨어 있다. 일상이 아닌 노동 현장에서 자주 발견되는 사물들로 이루어진 조각은 자연스럽게 그것을 도구로 사용하는 사람들과의 관계나 그들이 놓일 법한 긴장과 피로가 공존하는 작업 환경을 연상케 한다.

이 작품의 제작 과정은 사물을 아크릴 레진은 제스모나이트로 캐스팅하고 그들을 조합하는 노동 집약적인 과정을 거쳐 만들어 진다. 슬링벨트나 로프는 무거운 물체를 옮기거나 지지하는 역할을 주로 하기 때문에 항상 긴장감 있는 상태를 유지한다. 그런데, <슬링벨트 외>는 물체가 제 기능을 하는 상태가 아닌 마치 주어진 일을 마치고 휴식을 취하는 사람의 모습처럼 늘어뜨려 놓았다. 작가는 사회의 여러 노동 현장에서 마주하는 사물들에서 노동을 하고 피로를 느끼며 휴식을 취하기도 하는 인간의 모습을 발견하고 은유적으로 표현한다.
