An Gyeong-jin (b.1976) graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Dongguk University and completed his Master’s degree at the College of Fine Arts of Seoul National University. He held his solo exhibitions at ChungMunkyu Museum(2023), Gallery Life (2020), Gallery Moam (2019), Lighting Museum (2019), and Kimboseong Art Center (2017), and participated in many group exhibitions at the Outdoor Plaza of K-Water Culture Center, Icheon Art Hall, Art Gallery at Gyeonggi Arts Center, Gaon Gallery, Ginuesium Art Museum, and Bupyeong Art Center. The most recent book written by the artist is called 『Weight of Margin』 (2020).
By exploring the formativeness of shadows and margins that sculpture creates, An Gyeong Jin has been revealing the values behind the invisible and expressing the inner self and unconsciousness of human being. The COVID-19 pandemic has led him to deeply concern that he should break away from the conventional way of living and working, and as accordingly, he is expanding the boundaries of sculpture by trying new experiments such as improvisational sculpture, 3D modeling, and kinetic work.
<New Variation of the Goddess of Victory> reconstructs the NIKE of Samothrace with modern tools to represent victory as an ever-changing concept rather than a fixed figure. While the original NIKE highlighted the dynamism of the human body in the face of wind and gravity, the new NIKE illustrates victory as a fluid, multi-layered process through deconstruction and expansion, replication and reconstruction. By constructing the work with organically connected spheres and disassembled fragments, the artist expands the idea of victory not as a fixed concept, but as a concept formed in various relationships and processes. In this regard, the new NIKE is not simply a recreation of a classic sculpture, but a redefinition of what it means to a victory in the stream of the times.
The artist hopes that people who pass through the streets of Gwanghwamun and climb the stairs of Sejong Center for the Performing Arts will be able to stand together with the artwork and move forward toward their own victory in this era of changes.
