Earth, Let’s Play, Earth Play series, 1994 (reproduction in 2024) 지구야 놀자 Earth, Let’s Play is a performance involving a bicycle ride around the perimeters of Pungnaptoseong, where the exhibition is held. Since the early 1990s, Seung-taek Lee has painted the Earth on large rubber balloons with a diameter of three to seven meters and, along with citizens in various cities around the globe, has engaged in a series of “Earth Play” activities, rolling and pushing these balloons. Through these performances, participants engage in tactile interaction with the Earth by avidly throwing it up into the sky or rolling it; this physical engagement allows them to experience the profound message of ecological healing and protection viscerally.

This performance, featuring a bicycle transporting an Earth balloon, is being presented in Seoul for the first time since its cessation in 1994 by public security in front of Tiananmen Square, China. In this exhibition, Seung-taek Lee’s work, emblematic of Korean experimental art, blows life into the environmental art discourse of the early 1990s and brings it to the contemporary context. <지구야 놀자>는 전시가 열리는 풍납1동 골목과 풍납토성 둘레길을 자전거로 순환하는 퍼포먼스다. 이승택 작가는 1990년대 초반부터 직경 3-7m의 거대한 고무풍선에 유화 물감으로 지구를 그리고, 여러 나라의 도시에서 시민들과 함께 이를 굴리고 밀며 ‘지구놀이’ 연작을 진행해 왔다. 그 과정에서 남녀노소의 참여자들은 신나게 지구를 공중으로 날려보기도 하고, 굴리기도 하는 등 지구를 직관적으로 만지면서 생태계를 치유하고 보호하자는 메시지를 온몸으로 느껴왔다.
자전거에 지구를 싣고 달리는 퍼포먼스는 1994년 중국 천안문 앞에서 공안들로부터 제지를 받아 철수한 이후, 서울에서는 처음으로 재연된다. 이번 전시에서 한국 실험미술을 대표하는 이승택 작가의 작품은 그간 미술사의 영역에서 논의되었던 1990년대 초 환경미술을 생생한 바람의 현장으로 복귀시킨다.
