Root of Wisdom draws parallels between the lives of humans and plants, illustrating how the process of taking root, budding, blooming, and bearing fruit is influenced more by the surrounding environment than by individual effort. This represents how one cannot choose the starting point of their life or environment, nor predict the end or live according to plan. It carries the message that true wisdom comes from the humble acceptance of the myriad given realities and doing one’s best to overcome challenges while existing within the given conditions.
Sunhyuk Kim (b. 1984) earned his bachelor’s and master’s from the Department of Environmental Sculpture at the University of Seoul. He has held solo exhibitions at venues such as the Jumee Kim Gallery (2022) and SpaceBA (2019) and participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Sun Gallery, the National Theater of Korea, and N2 ART SPACE. He won the Grand Prize at the Art Jeju Up & Coming Artist Award.
<지혜의 뿌리>는 인간의 삶을 식물에 빗대어 표현하며 식물이 뿌리내리고 싹을 내고 잎과 꽃, 열매를 맺는 과정은 자신의 노력도 중요하지만 주어지는 환경에 훨씬 더 많은 영향을 받는다는 것을 보여준다. 이는 삶의 시작과 환경을 스스로 결정할 수 없고 마지막 때도 알 수 없으며 계획대로 살아지지 않는다는 것을 상징한다. 그저 주어진 많은 것들에 겸허히 순응하고 최선을 다해 극복해가며 현실을 살아가는 것이 삶을 대하는 지혜라는 메시지를 담고 있다.
김선혁(b.1984) 작가는 서울시립대학교 환경조각학과 학사 및 동 대학원 석사를 졸업하였다. 그는 주미킴갤러리(2022), 스페이스바(2019) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였고 선화랑, 국립극장, N2아트스페이스 등 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다. 그는 아트 제주 국제 청년 작가 공모에서 최우수상을 수상한 바 있다.
