소현우(b.1978)는 동아대학교 예술대학 조소과 및 동대학원 조소과를 졸업했다. 삼정갤러리(2022), gallery 4walls(2014), 노암 갤러리(2013), 송은아트큐브(2011) 등에서 다수의 개인전을 열었고, 대구문화예술회관 미술관, 엑스코, 코엑스, 한강 뮤지엄, 더현대 대구 등 여러 단체전에 참여하였다. 또한, MBC한국현대조각 초대전 작품상과 제10회 송은미술대상전에서 입상을 수상한 바 있다.

소현우는 인간의 욕망을 조각으로 표현하는 작가다. 욕망은 인간을 움직이고, 우리는 원하는 것을 얻기 위해 계속 앞으로 나아가게 한다. 우리는 현실에서 결핍된 것을 채우기 위해 꿈꾸고 상상한다. 허구나 이야기에서 시작된 그 상상은 어느새 진실이 되고, 믿음이 되고, 동화가 되어 새로운 세계를 향한 갈망으로 이어진다. 이러한 갈망은 결국 존재하지 않는 것들에 대한 동경으로 변모하고, 우리가 원하는 모습으로 세상과 마주한다.

노들섬은 도시의 중심에 있으면서도, 오랫동안 주변부로 남아 있던 장소다. 군사적 목적, 행정적 유예, 개발과 보류의 반복 속에서 이 섬은 한동안 ‘아무것도 아닌 공간’으로 비어 있었다. 현재는 공원과 공연장, 문화 시설이 조성되며 공공성과 일상성을 회복하고 있지만, 그 기반 위에는 여전히 정리되지 않은 시간의 층위가 남아 있다.

<미카엘의 침묵>은 인간의 역사를 형상화한 작업이다. 검을 내려놓고 고개를 숙인 자세는 승리나 패배, 어느 쪽도 말하지 않는다. 그는 더는 말하지 않고, 판단하지 않은 채 그 자리에 머무른다. 확신이 무너진 시대에, 다시 움직이기 전 멈춰 있는 이 형상은 회복 이전의 시간, 그 불완전한 시간의 존중을 담고 있다. 인간의 시간이 끝없이 지속되는 이 순간 과거를 회상하며 지금의 시간은 어떠한지 우리 스스로에게 질문을 던진다.

Born in 1978, So Hyun Woo studied sculpture at Dong-A University, completing both undergraduate and graduate programs. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, including at Samjung Gallery (2022), gallery 4walls (2014), Noam Gallery (2013), and Sunggok Art Museum’s SongEun Art Cube (2011). His works have been featured in group exhibitions at venues such as Daegu Art Center, EXCO, COEX, Hangang Museum, and The Hyundai Daegu. He is a recipient of the MBC Contemporary Sculpture Prize and was awarded at the 10th SongEun Art Award Exhibition.

So Hyun Woo is an artist who gives sculptural form to human desire. Desire propels us forward, driving us to pursue what we lack in reality. We dream and imagine in order to fill these voids. What begins as fiction or story soon transforms into truth, into belief, into myth—evolving into a longing for worlds yet to come. In this way, desire shifts into yearning for what does not exist, shaping the way we confront the world in the image of what we wish for.

Nodeul Island, though located at the very heart of the city, long remained peripheral—a place suspended in ambiguity. Once held for military use, deferred by administrative decisions, caught in cycles of development and neglect, it existed for a time as an “empty space,” a place of nothingness. Today, it has been reimagined as a site for parks, performance halls, and cultural life, regaining a sense of publicness and everyday use. Yet beneath this new layer, traces of unresolved time remain.

The Silence of Michaelreflects on the weight of human history. The figure, lowering his head and setting aside his sword, declares neither victory nor defeat. He chooses silence, refraining from judgment, lingering in stillness. In an age where certainties have collapsed, this moment of pause before renewal honors an imperfect, unsettled time. Standing before the work, we are invited to reflect on the passage of human time, and to ask ourselves what this present moment means.
