Born in 1996, Kim Jae Gyu studied sculpture at Dankook University. He has held solo exhibitions at Gallery JY (2023), YTN Namsan Gallery (2021), and Gallery www space (2020). His works have also been presented in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs, including at Moran Museum of Art, Seoul International Sculpture Festa, Danglim Museum, Daekyo International Sculpture Symposium, and Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP).

Kim Jae Gyu has long explored the tactile and organic qualities of knitted surfaces by welding and weaving stainless steel—a material typically associated with strength and industry. His sculptures juxtapose the inherent hardness of metal with the soft, intimate imagery of knitting, prompting a meditation on the nature of relationships. For the artist, “interweaving” is not confined to a formal sculptural device, but extends to the very structures of human life: our encounters, our connections, our memories.

Old Car Story begins with the symbolic narrative that “a human life starts with a single thread.” From the moment of birth, each of us sets out as one strand, gradually entangling with countless others—people, emotions, places—as time unfolds. This work visualizes that web of life through the act of weaving industrial metal as though it were yarn. The automobile, chosen as the central motif, is more than a vehicle; it is a vessel of lived experience—family trips, conversations with friends, solitary reflections.

In this sculpture, the car becomes a repository of memories and relationships layered over time. The crisscrossing metal pipes, entwined like threads, form an emotional landscape that symbolizes the structures of life itself. Rather than a literal representation, the work operates as a sculptural language that conveys the warmth of relationships and the density of memory. The Seoul Theater Creation Center exists as an experimental site where the boundaries of stage and everyday life blur. Within this context, Old Car Storystands as a symbolic mediator of accumulated relationships—an object that condenses memory, place, and connection.
