Born in 1984, Kim Ji Young studied sculpture at Silla University and earned her MFA from Sungshin Women’s University. She has held four solo exhibitions, including at the MediaZen R&D Center (2023), and has participated in numerous group shows at venues such as Dapsimni Art Lab, COEX, Paradise Hotel Busan (New Wing), and Ilsan Lake Park. Her accolades include the Special Prize at the 26th Korean Figurative Sculpture Exhibition and the Grand Prize in Sculpture at the 5th Hangeul Art Exhibition.
Kim Ji Young’s practice is built upon the repeated gestures of cutting, chiseling, refining, and stacking countless stones. For the artist, stone serves as a central metaphor for the wide web of “relationships” that surround both herself and those close to her. By drawing upon the architectural language of traditional Korean fortress walls, her works interweave the past, present, and future into a single sculptural form.
Harmony of Loveis installed in Gwanghwamun Square, a symbolic site that attracts many international visitors. This location underscores the artist’s intention to share Korean traditional sculptural techniques with a global audience. The work resembles a fragment of fortress architecture: a rhomboid column supporting three heart-shaped stones stacked in ascending tiers. While the hearts appear distinct, they are firmly bound together by interlocking stones that form a single harmonious whole. The interplay of separation and unity reflects the relational essence that underpins all of Kim’s sculptures—independent elements converging to complete one cohesive form.
