Body & Bodies is a series of sculptures that depict bodies undergoing transformation by deconstructing and conjoining themselves to their surroundings. The sculptures are expanded bodies that are not bound to a fixed shape, a miniature of a space, and reflect the situation, condition, and current of the exhibition space. The work depicts the process of static shapes falling apart, being shattered, and reassembled, always embracing the possibility of new change. Therefore, Cho’s sculptures are never finished, but rather embody the process of constant change.
Jaiyoung Cho (b. 1979) has a BFA and MFA in Sculpture from Ewha Womans University and an MA in Fine Arts from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. She has held solo exhibitions at Carvalho Park (2024), Krognoshuset (2021), Onsu Gonggan (2020), Paradise ZIP (2017), Kumho Museum of Art (2016), and Gallery KunstDoc (2014). She has participated in multiple group exhibitions held at venues such as Gyeongnam Art Museum, CR Collective, Paradise Art Space, G Valley Industrial Museum, Amorepacific Museum of Art, HITE Collection, Aural Galería, DOOSAN Art Center’s DOOSAN Gallery, Space SO, Blume Museum of Contemporary Art, Atelier Hermès, Museum SAN, and Ilwoo Space.
Body & Bodies 시리즈는 주변 공간의 변화 속에서 스스로를 해체, 접합하며 변형의 과정을 거치고 있는 신체 조각이다. 신체조각은 고정된 형상에 묶여있지 않는 확장된 신체이자, 공간을 축소시킨 형태로서 조각이 서 있는 전시 장소의 상황, 상태, 흐름을 머금고 있다. 멈추어 있던 형태들이 모두 떨어져나와 새롭게 분절되고 그 분절들이 다시 합쳐지는 과정을 담은 작품은 늘 새롭게 변화할 가능성을 담고 있다. 그러므로 조재영의 조각은 완결된 것이 아닌 시간 속에서 끊임없이 변화하고 있는 과정 그 자체임을 보여주고 있다.
조재영(b. 1979)은 이화여자대학교에서 조형예술대학 조소과를 전공하고 동대학원 석사를 마친 후, 네덜란드 위트레흐트예술학교에서 순수미술 석사를 졸업했다. Carvalho Park(2024), Krognoshuset(2021), 온수공간(2020), 파라다이스 ZIP(2017), 금호미술관(2016), 갤러리 쿤스트독(2014) 등에서 개인전을 개최했고, 경남도립미술관, 씨알콜렉티브, 파라다이스 집, G밸리산업박물관, 아모레퍼시픽미술관, 하이트컬렉션, 아우랄갤러리, 두산아트센터 두산갤러리, 스페이스 소, 블루메 미술관, 아뜰리에 에르메스, 뮤지엄 산, 일우스페이스 등 다수의 단체전에 참여했다.
